Russia Strikes Ukraine With Hypersonic and Ballistic Missiles
Russia has launched a combined strike on Ukraine using hypersonic and ballistic missiles, according to Russian state news agencies — an attack that demonstrates Moscow’s continued willingness to deploy its most advanced and difficult to intercept weapons against Ukrainian territory.
Hypersonic missiles present a particular challenge for air defense systems. Their speed and maneuverability make them significantly harder to intercept than conventional ballistic missiles, and their use signals that Russia is drawing on its full arsenal rather than conserving advanced capabilities.
Combined strikes using multiple missile types are a deliberate Russian tactic designed to overwhelm Ukrainian air defenses — forcing defense systems to respond to multiple threats simultaneously and increasing the likelihood that at least some missiles reach their targets.
Ukraine has relied heavily on Western supplied air defense systems to protect its cities and critical infrastructure. Each major Russian missile barrage tests the capacity and ammunition reserves of those systems. The sustained pace of Russian strikes throughout this conflict has placed enormous pressure on Ukraine’s ability to maintain adequate air defense coverage across the country.
The use of hypersonic missiles also carries a message beyond the immediate military impact. It is a signal to NATO and Western supporters of Ukraine that Russia retains significant advanced military capabilities despite over three years of war and sustained economic sanctions.
The war in Ukraine enters another day with missiles falling and people taking shelter.
That is the reality that continues while the world debates what comes next.
